KLAL KIDS – 2008/2009

Klal Kids is a fun-filled series of Sunday morning learn-and-play sessions designed for kindergarteners through 2nd graders.  Each session lasts for 1-1/2 hours from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.  The time is spent learning about the topic of the day through arts and crafts, stories, songs and snacks.

Grades K – 1

Students in kindergarten through first grade will concentrate on learning the meaning behind and customs for Jewish holidays.  To avoid undue repetition, we use a two-year curriculum.  This year we use activities and student materials developed by our current Grade 2 teacher, Robert P.  Next year, year two of the cycle, we will use the Let's Discover the Holidays series as the basis of class work.

The program consists of eight sessions, scheduled as follows:

September 21Shabbat   January 11Tu B'Shvat
October 12Simchat Torah   February 8Purim
November 16Mitzvot and Tzedakah   March 29Pesach
December 14Chanukah   May 17Israel Independence Day

Grade 2

Students in grade 2 will learn about the ins and outs and purposes for the synagogue itself, and then about the basic core values of "doing good" in a Jewish way: the key mitzvot or commandments.

The topics have been chosen so that there will be a connection between the subject matter being studied in Grade 2 and the holidays of the season.

We will use activities and student materials from the series Let's Discover the Synagogue and Let's Discover Mitzvot.

The program consists of eight sessions, scheduled as follows:

September 21The Synagogue: What It's For and the Ritual Objects   January 11Mitzvot: Save the Earth and Derech Eretz
October 12The Synagogue: How We Pray; The Rabbi and the Cantor   February 8Mitzvot: Tzedakah; Feed the Hungry
November 16The Synagogue: The Torah   March 29Mitzvot: Visit the Sick; Welcome Guests
December 14The Synagogue: A Place to Learn and Celebrate   May 17Mitzvot: Guard Your Tongue; Talmud Torah

Please fill out the following forms and return to the temple so they are received no later than September 12, 2008.

Klal Kids Registration Form

Klal Kids Parent Volunteer Form

Volunteering

Since Klal is a hands-on synagogue, parents of Klal Kids are asked to do some volunteer work for Klal Kids.  Please fill out the Klal Kids Parent Volunteer Form and enclose it with your registration and check.  Parents of Klal Kids are asked to volunteer to help in at least one session (or be one of our "reminderers", or serve as Klal Kids representative on the School Committee) during the school year, even if you have already volunteered in some other capacity.

Please indicate on your volunteer form if you are interested in being the reminderer or serving on the School Committee or serving as a classroom volunteer. To serve as a classroom volunteer, check off that column on the volunteer sheet: when you bring your child to the first session September 21, you'll sign up for in class slots for the rest of the year. Please fill in BOTH your first and second choices and we'll make every effort to accommodate you.
